About Us

As members of the Christian Church, we confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and proclaim Him Lord and Savior of the world.

Purpose of the Church

Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV - The Great Commission)

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Luke 10:27 (NIV - The Great Commandment)

He answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with your entire mind; and, love your neighbor as yourself."

History

The First Church of Christ of Tonawanda was brought into being on Sunday, March 27, 1853.

The congregation built its first church at Seymour and Broad Streets, known as the Christian Chapel, in 1857.

Baptisms were originally performed in the Niagara River, until a baptistry was installed in the church building.

The First Church of Christ celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1903, the same year that Tonawanda was incorporated as a city. The congregation consisted of 450 members.

Our present building at 85 Grove Street was erected in 1939. The first sod was turned by Mrs. A. Bellinger, and the cornerstone was laid on December 16, 1939. The building was dedicated on June 16, 1940.
